Michael Rakowitz is an Iraqi-American conceptual artist who operates within art spaces and beyond them. Rakowitz has shown in venues including dOCUMENTA(13), The MoMA, MassMOCA, the 10th Istanbul Biennial. He was the recipient of the 2012 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award and is currently a professor at Northwestern University. His art is deeply political and focuses on the Middle East, namely Iraq. In 2004, he reopened his grandfather’s import and export business, Davison’s & Co., which first operated out of Baghdad and then relocated to New York when his family was exiled in 1946. He resurrected the family business and offered free shipping to Iraq three months after the U.S. declared stifling trade restrictions on the country.
